Going to Guarapuava was quite an adventure. Sergio, Claudemir, Adir, Izael, Alan, Marcelo (their friend), and I headed off once the
temperature got above 50 degrees, about 10am. It was pretty easy going; Marcelo came on a BMX so we had plenty of rest time waiting for him to
catch up. The route we took once was the main road to Guarapuava, but now is considered a back road. We took because of the very few cars
that drive on it, and because it only has two hills, one into the valley and one out, both over a mile long and very steep. It took two and
a half hours to get o Guarapuava, where he stopped for lunch. Once the food settled we hit the road again.
When we got to the first big hill on the way back I stopped and waited for Alan, since he did not have any brakes. He held onto the rack I
have on the back of my bike and I braked for him. We made it down the hill fine, but far behind the rest of the group who had taken the hill
without braking.
Alan and I continued on, and we came to another hill, we stopped to see if he needed my brakes again, decided he would not and we hopped back
on our bikes. As I started to pedal the cable that pulls my rear derailleur out from my tire slipped as I tried to change gears. The derailleur
completely detached from the cable and landed itself in my spokes. Riding along, I first heard a loud grinding noise coming from my rear
tire, then I felt the tire stop completely. I jumped off to inspect the damage. Seven spokes - all from one side had been ripped out,
giving my tire a banana shape, when looked at from the side.
Alan, now at the bottom of the hill saw me stop, motion for him and he started his way up the hill. I tried in vain to true the rim, ending
up with an ellipse shaped banana instead of a round one. At this point, still a good 45 minutes by car from home, we decided we had better
call for help. And, of course, the phone was busy for the next one to two hours. So we started walking. After two and a half hours, and
after having climbed the 1.25 mile long hill, we were picked up by Everson.
So now I am working on getting my bike fixed up.
